All Ages How to teach spirituality to children?

I am looking for ideas on how to teach spirituality to my 18th month and 9 year old children. We are not religious, so I am looking at other methods of teaching them ideals such as gratitude, etc., mainly age appropriate books. Does anyone have ideas?

There is a site called JW.org that has many activities for children. While it is a site from a religious organization, most of the videos and kids pages are very basic about sharing, being thankful, etc. The site hosts many different languages as well, although not everything is translated. The biggest translated language on the site seems to be English. There is a lot on there so you might have to search for what you want but I think the stuff for the kids can be found on the bottom under Children.

I use this web site very often, JW.ORG, there is a section for children with tons of teaching materials, videos, activities and games. The material and Activities there can be downloaded and you can also print.As your children gets older they will still need to be taught, there is a section also for teens and pre-teens. As a parent there are articles for you as well that can help you to deal with the challenges they may face at school in their community and at home.

I believe the best way to teach young children in the home is by example. Involve your children into your spiritual activities. Share with them its importance. Make it a priority. It becomes more of a lifestyle rather than a learned subject.

Here are my suggestions:

• For books, you can buy those with themes like kindness, gratitude and respect. Lots of bookstores have books with moral lessons.
• You can also make them watch movies or animated series with such themes. In my country, we have the Knowledge channel which features such shows with themes like spirituality and honesty and even respect.
• Let them participate in organisations for the homeless or for kids in foster care.

Teaching religion can be really boring if you do it by the books. To teach religion more effectively you need to give out examples and tell interesting stories that has a lot of values in it. The best way to teach your children about spirituality is to be their role model in that aspect. If you want to teach them about gratitude you need to show them how well behaved you are in that aspect.

The best way to teach spirituality to children is to define to them the meaning of right and wrong. People are born with a conscience and a sense of right and wrong is present in kids who have started discerning things about life. So it need not be difficult. The toughest challenge you will face is from the fact that you are not religious. As they develop, they will start challenging the rules since there are no higher imperatives for they to obey them.

Thе сhildrеn knоw thаt wе аrе hаppy tо аnswеr quеstiоns аnd wе аdmit whеn wе just dоn't knоw. But mоstly, wе еxplаin things in spirituаl tеrms rеgulаrly (i.е. Hеаvеnly Fаthеr wаnts yоu tо bе hаppy. Thаt is why hе tеlls us nоt tо hurt оur brоthеr- yоu wоuldn't bе hаppy if hе hurt yоu, right?)

You do not have to "teach" spirituality to a child. Why?

Because the children already know it. Because it is what they are and what we are.

We are spiritual beings who are having a physical experience, and children understand it very clearly. Only that since they do not process it intellectually, we believe that they do not understand it.
