Introduction/Overview
Snack Bar Subtraction is a fun activity and a great follow to the Addition Snack Bar Activity. It will strengthen skills in subtracting currency and decimal numbers.
The students will enjoy the realistic buying experience, students are asked to select items to buy in the "Snack Bar" and compute for the change of their snacks. It's a great way to spend time with your students or kids while strengthening their skills in subtracting currencies and decimal numbers.

Procedure
The Snack Bar Subtraction Activity is a realistic and enjoyable role-playing game. The students will enjoy the realistic buying experience, students are asked to select items to buy in the "Snack Bar" and compute for the change of their snacks. It's a great way to spend time with your students or kids while strengthening their skills in subtracting currencies and decimal numbers.

Steps:
  1. Print the Fruits Playing Card (I recommend cardboard)
  2. Cut the Fruits Playing Card.
  3. Print the Snack Bar Menu
  4. Download the Integers card game- Subtracting integers Activity sheet 1* and Activity Sheet 2
Warm-up Activity :
  1. Distribute Activity sheet 1 to your students. Make sure you explain and model how to answer the 2 examples on the sheet before students start answering on their own.
Example 1 : Subtracting without borrowing
  • Write down the two numbers, one under the other, with the decimal points lined up
  • Then subtract normally, from right to left remembering to put the decimal point in the answer.

Example 2 : Subtracting with borrowing

  • If the digit you are subtracting is bigger than the digit you are subtracting from, you have to borrow a group of ten from the column to the left. Then subtract normally, remember to put the decimal point.

2. Ask the students to answer Activity sheet 1* (Subtracting Integers)
3. Afterward, discuss the answers to Activity sheet 1(Subtracting Integers)

Main Activity :
Option 1
(Teacher Initiated Activity)
  1. Distribute activity sheet 2 to your students.
  2. Shuffle the Snack Playing Card and place them in the middle of the table face down. Pick 1 Snack Bar Playing Card and ask the students to find its price on the menu and write it on Activity sheet 2.
  3. Do this until you have drawn at least 5 cards.
  4. Afterward, ask them to find the Change by subtracting the "Amount Paid" column with the "Prices" column. The difference would be the "Change"
  5. Discuss the answers to the equations.
Option 2 (Student Initiated Activity)
  1. Ask the students to find a partner. They will then decide who will be playing "A" and "B"
  2. Set up the timer, and play the game for 10 to 15 minutes.
  3. Ask the students to shuffle the Snack Bar playing cards and then distribute them evenly with the number face down. So for 2 players, each player should have 20 cards.
  4. Each player should keep their cards in a stack facing down.
  5. Player "A" turns two cards face up, and say "This is my order" and give it to player "B".
  6. Player "B" will read the order and check the price on the menu. Player "B" will write the prices on the Activity Sheet 2.
  7. Player "B" will compute for the change by subtracting the "Amount Paid" column with the "Prices" column. The difference would be the "Change"
  8. Player "B" will then say the total change aloud. If he gets the correct amount he will get 1 point.
  9. The cards will then be placed at the bottom of their card pile. Afterward, they will reverse roles.
  10. When the timer goes off, each player should count the total points they got.

    * A word file is provided so teachers can edit the equations.
