Introduction/Overview
Fractions are a very important concept in Math, young children would often time have difficulty identifying different fractions. In this activity, students will have fun and engaging activities in Identifying Fractions using Pizza Slices. It will strengthen skills in identifying similar and dissimilar fractions in a fast and easy way.

Procedure
n this activity, students will have fun and engaging activities in Identifying Fractions using Pizza Slices. It will strengthen skills in identifying similar and dissimilar fractions in a fast and easy way.

 Steps: Download and print the Fraction Pizza cards (I recommend cardboard) Cut the Fraction Pizza cards. There are 2 sets of cards (1 with label & 1 without a label). Each set will have 24 Fraction Pizza cards: 1 whole card halves: 1/2 & 2/2 thirds: 1/3, 2/3, & 3/3 fourths: 1/4, 2/4, 3/4 & 4/4 sixths: 1/6, 2/6, 3/6, 4/6, 5/6, & 6/6 eights: 1/8, 2/8, 3/8, 4/8, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8, & 8/8 Download the Let's Have a Fraction Pizza Party- (Adding Fractions) Activity Sheet 1** and Activity Sheet 2 Warm-up Activity : Distribute Activity sheet 1 to your students. Have a brief discussion on Equivalent fractions using the examples given in Activity Sheet 1. Make sure you explain and model how to answer the 2 examples on the sheet before students start answering on their own. Discussions : Equivalent Fractions are fractions that have the same value but look different. They have different numerators and denominators, but their fractional values are the same. These fractions are really the same: Why are they the same? Because both numbers represent half. In fact, if you simplify 2/4 by dividing it by 2/2 its simplified value is 1/2. If you look at the pizza on the right (2/4), it's combined slices are exactly the same size as the 1 slice of the pizza to the left (1/2) their slices are the same sizes. . Afterward, ask the students to answer Activity sheet 1** (Equivalent Fractions). Make sure you explain the 2 examples on the sheet before they start answering. Main Activity : Option 1 (Teacher Initiated Activity) Distribute activity sheet 2 to your students. Shuffle the Fraction Pizza Card (Set-A) and place them in the middle of the table facing up so that the cards are seen by the students. Pick up 1 Fraction Pizza Card and ask the students to find it's Equivalent Fractions on the Other Set Fraction Pizza Cards (Set-B). Ask them to write the Fraction on Activity Sheet 2. Do this until you have drawn almost all the cards. Option 2 (Student Initiated Activity) Set up the timer, and play the game for 10 minutes. Ask them to choose who is Student A & B. The will prepare 2 sets of Playing Cards for each pair. Ask the student A to place the 1st set of Fraction Pizza cards on top of the table, place them all face-up on the table so every card is seen. Then ask student B to shuffle the 2nd set of Fraction Pizza Cards, but this time these cards are stack one on top of the other face down so that the cards are not seen. Each player takes turns getting 1 card from the 2nd Set of Cards (the one face down), read the fractions, and look for its equivalent fraction on the 1st set of Cards (The one spread on the table). Both Fractions will then be placed in Activity sheet 2. Each correct answer is equivalent to one point. When the timer goes off, each player should count the total points they got. The player with the most points wins. ** A word file is provided so teachers can edit the equations.
