Introduction/Overview
Dominoes is a tile-based game played with rectangular domino tiles. Each domino is a rectangular tile with a line dividing its face into two square ends. Each end is marked with a number of spots (also called pips, nips, or dobs) or is blank. Which makes it great in representing fractions and operations of fractions. In this activity, we will be using domino tiles to divide fractions.

Procedure
In this activity, we will be using domino tiles to divide fractions. The red spots also (also called pips, nips, or dobs) will be the numerator and the block spot will be the denominator.
Steps:
  1. Download and print the Domino game tiles
    (I recommend cardboard)
There are 52 Domino tiles : 1/2..1/3... up to 9/9.
  2. Cut the Domino game tiles. Each tile comes in 2 colors red dots - numerator and black dots denominator
  3. Download the Domino effect - Dividing fractions - Activity Sheet 1* and Activity Sheet 2

    Warm-up Activity :

  1. Shuffle the Domino tiles and place them in the middle of the table face down. The teacher can choose how many Domino tiles to use depending on the level of the students.
  2. Pick a tile and ask the students to identify the fractions on the cards. The red spots also (also called pips, nips, or dobs) will be the numerator and the block spot will be the denominator.
  3. Afterward, ask the students to answer Activity sheet 1* (dividing similar & Dissimilar fractions). Make sure you explain the 2 examples on the sheet before they start answering.
  4. Discuss the answers.

    Main Activity :

    Option 1
    (Teacher Initiated Activity)

  1. Shuffle the Domino tiles and place them in the middle of the table face down. Pick 2 domino tiles and ask the students to write the fractions on the Activity sheet 2. Do this until your students have at least written 10 equations on their sheets.
  2. Afterward, ask them to find the quotient of fractions on their activity sheet 2.
  3. Discuss the answers to the equations.

Note: The teacher can choose the number of Domino tiles to used depending on the level of the students.

    Option 2 (Student Initiated Activity)

  1. Set up the timer, and play the game for 10 minutes
  2. Ask the students to shuffle Domino tiles and then distribute them evenly with the number face down.
  3. Each player turns two cards face up, read the fractions, and divide them. The equation will then be placed in the Activity sheet 2.
  4. Each correct answer is equivalent to one point.
  5. When the timer goes off, each player should count the total points they got.
  6. The player with the most points wins.
  7. For the advanced students, they can draw 3 cards instead of 2 and write them on the activity sheet.

Note: The teacher can choose the number of Domino tiles to used depending on the level of the students.
* A word file is provided so teachers can edit the equations.
